Card Battler Spell Expansion - 600 Spells, 20 Schools, 1,200 Tiles
A downloadable asset pack
600 spells. Twenty schools. One art style. Every one drawn twice, so you can pick the take that suits the card — 1,200 tiles at 512 × 512.
Card art packs give you heroes and monsters: the things that cast. Then your game needs the spell itself — a fireball, a ward, a heal, a curse — and you are back to cropping an ability icon and hoping nobody looks closely.
A spell is light, not an object
A sword is a silhouette. Put it on a plain backdrop and it reads perfectly. A spell has no silhouette, and a fireball floating on a grey card is a picture of nothing.
So every spell in here is drawn somewhere. A lightning bolt over rain-slick flagstones. A summoning circle on a cellar floor. A frost bloom across a black window at night. The effect is the light source and the room takes the colour off it — which is what makes a spell card look like something happening rather than an icon pasted on a card.
| Spells | 600, each drawn twice — 1,200 tiles |
| Size | 512 × 512 square PNG |
| Schools | 20 folders, 30 spells each |
| Data | spells.json — name, school, flavour, tags |
The twenty schools
Elemental — Pyromancy · Cryomancy · Electromancy · Geomancy · Aeromancy · Tidecraft
Arcane — Arcanum · Conjuration · Illusion · Chronomancy · Chaos · Runecraft
Light and dark — Radiance · Umbral · Hemomancy · Necromancy
Life and ruin — Verdancy · Restoration · Wards · Blight
Each school has its own palette and its own subject matter — Pyromancy burns orange on scorched stone, Umbral eats the light, Hemomancy is red on black, Runecraft is cold blue cut into iron — while every tile is drawn in the same 32-bit pixel hand, on the same canvas, at the same size. A hand of cards from any mix of them still looks like one game.
Every file is named after its spell
Not Pyromancy_03b_04.png. Spells/Pyromancy/Ember_Bolt_1.png and
Ember_Bolt_2.png.
Twelve hundred files with sheet numbers on them means owning a list of names and no way to
get from one to the other. The sheet index is an artefact of how the art was cut, not something
you should have to learn, so it is gone: the spell's name is on the file, and
spells.json carries the name, the school, what the art shows, a line of card
flavour and a set of tags for all 600.
Built for the card, usable anywhere
These are cut to the Card Battler Mega Pack's art viewport, which is where the 512 × 512 comes from — a tile lands at scale 1.0 at @1x and 2.0 at @2x, integer and crisp, no resampling. If you use that template they need no setup at all.
If you don't, they are square PNGs and behave like square PNGs: spell cards, ability tooltips, skill-tree nodes, item art, loading art, or the picture in a rulebook.
Try it first
The complete Pyromancy school — 30 spells, 60 tiles, both takes, full resolution, same licence — is a free download on this page. It is a whole school out of the twenty, not a watermarked teaser.
The rest of the set
All of it is drawn in the same 32-bit pixel hand, on the same canvas, at the same 512 × 512 — so a hand of cards built from any mix of these looks like one game.
And one free companion, for the space behind the cards. Wide rather than square, and free.
Licence
Use it in an unlimited number of projects, commercial or personal. Sell them — no revenue cap, no unit cap, no royalty. Modify anything: recolour, crop, re-slice, composite. No attribution required — credit is welcome, never necessary.
The one thing you can't do is resell the art itself as an asset pack. Ship the assets in your game; don't ship the assets as your product. That single restriction is what makes the rest of the grant possible.
